Square Enix has announced the postponement of Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link, a
GPS-based action RPG, originally slated for release in 2024. The delay follows
previous setbacks, including the game's second closed beta test, which was moved
from April to May 2024.
Designed as Square Enix’s answer to Pokemon GO, Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link
offers players a location-based adventure where they can collect "Pieces" of
Disney characters and team up with allies to battle the Heartless. The game
features two modes: "GPS-Mode" for real-world exploration, encouraging players
to interact with their environment, and "Touch-Mode," which lets users teleport
to global locations from the comfort of their homes. This dual approach aims to
make the game more inclusive, addressing the limitations of games like Pokemon
GO for players unable to travel or access specific locations.
Despite being initially scheduled for release in the coming weeks, there has
been little information about the game until recently, when Square Enix
officially confirmed the delay. In a statement shared via the Kingdom Hearts
Missing-Link Twitter account, the company expressed regret over the decision:
"While preparing for the launch of Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link, we have made the
difficult decision to delay the release. We sincerely apologize to all players
who have been looking forward to the release. We appreciate your patience.
Please look forward to further information."
First revealed in 2022 as part of the Kingdom Hearts 20th anniversary
celebrations, Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link remains largely shrouded in mystery.
Confirmed features include real-world GPS functionality, character creation, and
an AP stamina system. While there have been speculations about its connection to
Kingdom Hearts 4, the main focus of the game is still unknown and will likely
stay under wraps for a while.
This news comes on the heels of Tetsuya Nomura, the legendary co-creator of
the Kingdom Hearts series, announcing his contemplation of retirement. Nomura,
who turns 54 later this year, mentioned that he plans to conclude the
long-running saga he started in 2002, signaling the end of an era in the
franchise.
